Books

This is not a comprehensive list, just books we have on our shelf and find useful. If you know of one that you think should be here, contact us with the info and a brief write-up.

In general, these books are not tool-specific.

You can order these books from Amazon.com. We recommend it.

Building Windows Help Files. Keith E. Bugg. 1995. R&D Books/Prentice Hall. ISBN 0-13-520883-1.

A little outdated but still very useful for a beginner to winhelp development.

Building Windows 95 Help Files. Nancy Hickman. 1996. M&T Books/ MIS:Press. ISBN 1-55851-477-5.

A good general winhelp 95 development book. Also covers DLLs, linking to outside files, and other advanced stuff. If you are having problems finding this book, you can contact the author at nhickman@onlinearchitects.com

Designing Windows 95 Help: A Guide to Creating Online Documents. Mary Deaton and Cheryl Lockett Zubak. 1996. Que Books. ISBN 0-7897-0362-9.

An excellent book that covers everything you want to know about 95-style help, including planning projects. Is out of print but you can get it from some used book dealers.

Developing Online Help for Windows 95. 2nd edition. Scott Boggan, David Farkas, Joe Welinske. 1996. International Thompson Computer Press. ISBN 185032211-2.

A good book from some of the grandfathers of help development. Includes design strategies and managing projects.

The Developer's Guide to WINHELP.EXE. Jim Mischel. 1994. Coriolis Group Book/Wiley and Sons. ISBN 0-471-30325-9.

For a long time, this was really the only book available. It is still the bible for basic macro syntax. It is wrong just often enough to make the game fun. May not be in print.

Microsoft Windows 95 Help Authoring Kit. 1995. Microsoft Press. ISBN 1-55615-892-0

An excellent book that details the way a Windows 95 help file should look. Also goes into the research behind why it should look that way. Comes with the Microsoft HAT. A must have.

The Official Microsoft HTML Help Authoring Kit. Steve Wexler and Brett Foster. 1998. Microsoft Press. ISBN 1-57231-603-9.

We have this one but have not had a chance to read it. We hear that it is the definitive HTML help book. And Steve Wexler is well-known and very good.

RoboHELP 6.0. Kevin A. Siegel. 1998. IconLogic; ISBN 189176229X

A pretty good book written in a tutorial style. He also has a version 7.0 out on the market. See amazon.com for more info.

Standards of Online Communication. JoAnn T. Hackos and Dawn M. Stevens. 1997. Wiley Computer Publishing. ISBN 0-471-15695-7

A great book from one of our heroes (Hackos). While it covers more than help, the design principles alone are worth the expense.

After all, anyone can create a help system— the trick is to make it useable...
